Food Remedies for Insomnia

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that is characterized by difficulty falling and/or staying asleep. People with insomnia have one or more of the following symptoms:
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Waking up often during the night and having trouble going back to sleep
  • Waking up too early in the morning
  • Feeling tired upon waking


Causes of Insomnia
  • Significant life stress (job loss or change, death of a loved one, divorce, moving)
  • Illness
  • Emotional or physical discomfort
  • Environmental factors like noise, light, or extreme temperatures (hot or cold) that interfere with sleep
  • Some medications may interfere with sleep
  • Interference in normal sleep schedule (jet lag or switching from a day to night shift, for example)  
Treatment for Insomnia

  1. Bottle Gourd is a common vegetable in Bangladesh. It is useful for treatment of Insomnia.The mixture of bottle gourd juice and sesame oil acts as an effective medicine for insomnia. It should be massaged over scalp every night. The cooked leaves of gourd are also beneficial in the treatment of insomnia.
  2. Lettuce contains a sleep inducing substance called "lectucarium". Lettuce is valuable for insomniac patients. 
  3. The insomniac patients should take plenty of curd this will induce sleep.
  4. Honey is beneficial for the treatment of insomnia. It has hypntonic action in bringing sleep. It should be taken with water, before going bed, in doses of two teaspoonfuls in a big cupful of water.
  5. Milk is very valuable in sleeplessness. It acts as a tonic and a tranquilliser. A glass of milk sweetened with honey, should be taken every night before going to bed in insomnia.
